I'd take to writing again

I'd take to writing again
If only every word didn't make me weep
And trap me in its power, merciless
My comfort nowhere to keep.

I'd take to writing again
If I didn't have to rummage alone
Through 'our' ruins and debris,
Looking for 'our' lost home.

I'd take to writing again
Ballads, sonnets, free verse - just choose,
But the pen's too heavy and the wit too dull
Too dull, even on 'our' past to muse.

I'd take to writing again
Oh yes, please in me believe, my dear
But the words themselves, echoes would be
Of laughter, long dead and sobs silenced 'ere.

I'd take to writing again
To escape this self imposed exile
But where would my refuge be, if not
In the warm embrace of frozen time.
